Cold Filtered Coffee
(The way I do it at least)

| Cold filtered or cold-brewed
coffee is great because it is not bitter due to the cold brewing process
that ensures the oils and acids in the beans are never released. It is when
the oils and acids are released when the grounds are heated that give coffee
it's bitterness. But in cold brewing there is no heat, so no oil, no acid
= no bitterness = one smooth cup o' joe. So if you want to be welcomed by a nice, smooth, non-bitter cup of coffee this is for you. Mmmm mmm good! If you are too lazy to do this you can actually buy a kit for about $40.00 www.toddycafe.com |

cup French Press (I think I have the 8 cup, but if you are going to buy one, there is a 12 cup one) about $20.00 |

coffee grounds. Do not skimp! I use Dunkin Donuts because it is cheap and has a slight nutty flavor. You can find them 2 pounds for $10 at some DDs. Whole Foods 365 blends are pretty cheap and good also, I like the Pleasant Morning Buzz or the French Roast, both available for 1.5 pounds for $10. I always get the pre-ground stuff, it's just too much work to grind that much coffee. |

Add 4 cups of cold water and push the handle down so that the grounds are fully covered by water, stir gently with a wooden spoon. Let it soak for minimum of 16 hours to 24 hours at room temperature. After doing this a couple times, you will not even need a measuring cup. For example one cup of grounds is right at the bottom of the metal band on the lower part of the handle on this french press. |

After 16-24 hours of soaking, push the lever on the french press all the way down then pour the coffee through a filter into the Nalgene bottle. This might take a while depending on the grind of your coffee. Pour over ice and enjoy! Or chill then dilute with some water or milk. You can drink it straight but it's pretty darn concentrated. Wash out the french press and start soaking your next batch of coffee immediately, because you will definitely need/want it. The coffee will keep in the fridge for 5-7 days (not that I have ever kept it that long.) Or you can freeze it, or heat it up in the microwave if you want a nice hot cup of coffee. |
