Mask 101: How to Make a Mask
(When youÕve never made
one before, sorry the page is ugly, but itÕs functionalÉ like me.)
Make sure you are using 100% cotton for both layers
of your mask. |
1. You can download the pattern here. Print
it as full size 100%. |
2. Cut 4 pieces of fabric. two for the liner, two for
the outside of the mask. |
3. Put the bright side of
the fabric together and sew 1/8 inch along the edges on the curved side. |
4. Without cutting the
thread, sew the liner along the curved side |
5. Trim both pieces, the
printed and the lining, at the top and the bottom. |
6. Nestle the two pieces.
Make sure the seam is pointing out on both pieces. |
7. Sew down the straight
side 1/8 inch in. |
8. Without cutting the
thread, DO NOT sew the edge. Sew down the other side of the mask. |
9. Sew along the contour
for the mask. |
10. Flip the mask inside
out. Then I pinch and roll the top tip and the bottom seams of the mask
between my fingers to create a sharper seam. |
11. Iron the edges of the
mask. |
12. Fold and iron the mask
at the 4 inch mark. Fold and iron both sides in. (Pictured
is my first fold.) |
13. After both sides have
been ironed in. Unfold the sides and fold in about half an inch and iron
again. |
14. Fold and iron again. |
15. Sew along the edge of
the folds. |
16. I use a straw to help
thread the elastic through. I use 7 inches for the
these, but it will differ based on the stretchiness of your elastic. |
17. Pull the elastic so
the knot is inside the fold. |
18. You can also use
string, some people like this a lot more because it wonÕt pull on your ears
and tends to be a snugger fit. I use 50 inches of paracord
with the inner cords pulled out and the ends melted. I use a string locks
instead of tying them. You can get them on Amazon. (click here) |
19. And youÕre done! |
